Southern California Summer School
41st Annual Summer Session

June 19 - 22, 2003 (Thursday through Sunday)

Pilgrim Pines Conference Center, Yucaipa, California

http://www.coronabahais.org/scbs

Presenters/speakers: Prof. Fereshteh Bethel, Fred Schechter and Ed Diliberto

College-age facilitators: Gary and Margie Bulkin.

What is a summer school? The Institution of the Summer School was established by Shoghi Effendi as a means for deepening, for attracting non-believers, and for experiencing close community life. Southern California has had its own regional school, under the auspices of the National Spiritual Assembly, since 1962.

Where is the school held? The school is held at a rented conference center in the beautiful serene San Bernadino mountains (at an elevation of about 4,000 feet), surrounded by clean air, tall pine trees, a running spring, and star-filled skies. Cabins are clean and carpeted and hold roughly 6 people each. The road to the center is easy to travel. Meals are provided.

Is the school for individuals or families? Is it for kids, youth, or adults? It is for all these. Classes and activities are for all ages, with special emphasis placed on integrating age groups. Families have long reported that the experience bonds them — families are not split up but instead share a cabin. Many youth refer to the session as the high point of their year.

What is the program like? Emphasis is placed on enjoyable, informative, interactive classes. Evening programs integrate all age groups, typically including performances, music, a campfire, and social time. Afternoons include recreation time for play (basketball, swimming in the center’s outdoor pool, ping-pong, volleyball), hiking, or just simply quiet time and rest. Youth have played a central role in the school for several years now — their enthusiasm and spirit has led to the school reaching full capacity in the past four years — about 200 attendees of all ages.

What about costs? The costs are kept as low as possible, and are lower than similar schools in other parts of the country. Discounts are available for families. Many Local Spiritual Assemblies provide scholarships to the school (something we strongly encourage).
