Ideas from the Committees—Inspiring Devotional Programs

Mississippi's “One Common Faith” Multi-Media Devotions

Husband-and-wife art teachers Anne and Bruce O’Hara created a moving opening devotional program for Mississippi Bahá’í School, which connected participants to the theme of “One Common Faith.” The O’Hara’s used a laptop and projector to put images on a large screen. They had searched websites in order to collect visual images, as well as sacred chants, from several of the world’s great religions. One faith at a time was featured, with images such as religious symbols, icons, statues and other artwork, and places of worship from that religion filling the screen against the sound of chanting (Buddhist monks, Gregorian, Islamic call to prayer, etc.). After the sights and sounds of each faith, several readers came forward to read or sing verses from that religion’s sacred writings before the next faith was featured. This was an inspiring introduction to the oneness of religion. Everyone was transported still higher — after the devotional program all were invited to watch a DVD of Bahá’í Pilgrimage, which seemed the culmination of all the religious strivings of the past.
